Dr. Huerta-Yepez is an Assistant Researcher in the Tumor Immunology Laboratory within the Division of Oral Biology and Medicine at UCLA and serves as the Chair of the Oncology Research Unit at the Children's Hospital "Federico Gómez" in Mexico City, Mexico. In addition, Since July 2021, Dr. Huerta-Yepez has been part of NKore Biotherapeutics, serving as the Director of Laboratory Operations. She is nationally and internationally renowned for her contributions to understanding the mechanisms of chemoresistance developed by tumor cells. Dr. Huerta-Yepez has received numerous honors and awards and is a member of several professional societies.
Dr. Huerta-Yepez also chairs and teaches various undergraduate and graduate courses at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the largest university in Mexico.
In addition, she has delivered more than 100 invited lectures and presentations worldwide and has published over 110 high-impact journal articles, reviews, commentaries, and book chapters in the fields of cancer and infectious diseases. Dr. Huerta-Yepez collaborates with researchers from Mexico, Colombia, and Italy, and has organized numerous conferences and courses on chemoresistance in cancer. She is a pioneer in tissue microarray and digital pathology techniques as approaches to cancer research in Mexico and is also an expert in several experimental models for cancer studies.
Throughout her career, Dr. Huerta-Yepez has trained over 50 graduate students and healthcare professionals in her laboratory, many of whom have gone on to become independent scientists.
One of Dr. Huerta-Yepez's major contributions to science was the identification of key transcriptional factors, including YY1 and HIF1, which are directly implicated in resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs in several cancers.
